about

Monoliths and Sepulchres is The Octopod's debut full album. It features equal parts meticulous ensemble work and free wheeling dynamic improvisation in a collection of tunes that range from the serious and heavy to the satirical and self-referential. The band is Garrett Wingfield's compositional brainchild, but the members of the ensemble bring the music to life in unexpected and exciting ways.

Five horns front the band (3 saxes, trumpet, trombone) to give a full sound which at times can emulate that of a big band or a brass band, while still navigating intricate counterpoint. The rhythm section holds a deep knowledge of jazz and subtle connection, but often breaks loose and tears apart the framework of the music.

The album is organized in two ways: an alternation between improvised interlude and composed piece, and a general entropic decline into silliness. Each member of the group contributes a solo improvisation, and each has an individual character that reflects the musician's personality.

Monoliths was recorded in Michael Briggs' home studio in Denton, TX, and endeavors to maintain a certain punk/DIY sound to it while still clearly and accurately reflecting the intended effect of the material. The high art/low art aesthetic is a key part of the band's history and identity.
